Pest Identification - Box Elder Bug
What is a boxelder bug?
Adult boxelder bugs are about 1/2 an inch long with flat wings that lay across their back. They are black with distinctive red markings. Their name comes from one of their primary food sources, the BoxElder tree. Boxelder bugs also feed on Ash, Maple and Cherry trees as well as a variety of other seed-bearing plants.
Why do I have them?
Boxelder bugs invade homes in large numbers in the late summer and early autumn searching for a place to spend the winter. They like warm, sunny places and are more likely to invade homes and buildings that get a fair amount of sunshine in the winter months. They typically remain active until cold weather arrives which sends them searching for cracks, crevices and other sheltered areas inside and will stay there until warmer weather returns.
Are they dangerous?
Boxelder bugs are harmless insects. They do not bite people nor do they cause damage to properties. When found in large numbers, however, they are considered nuisance pests and may stain walls and other areas with their excrement.
How do I get rid of box elder bugs?
Boxelder bugs are challenging to control because of their likelihood to hide. It is highly recommended that the services of a pest control company, such as Wil-Kil are used. At Wil-Kil Pest Control we offer effective boxelder bug control to eliminate box elder bug problems.
Can I do it myself?
Because of their ability to hide, do-it-yourself boxelder bug treatments and products are not usually effective and may contain pesticides that can be harmful to people and pets if they are misused or mixed improperly.
