What is an Asian Lady Beetle?

Multicolored Asian lady beetles, also known as lady beetles are smooth and oval in shape; they have a convex body and they may or may not be marked with spots, but all have a black “M” or “W” marking on their pronotum, the shield that hides their head.  While mostly known for their red coloring and black spots, lady beetles vary in color and are often found in shades of tan and orange as well.

Why do I have them?

Lady beetles are probably the most easily recognized of all insects. Lady beetles are causing some concern among homeowners in Eau Claire, Madison, Milwaukee, and throughout Wisconsin and the surrounding ares simply because of their sheer numbers.  Accidentally introduced into the United States some years ago, these pests first started appearing in the Upper Midwest in 1998.  In 2000, they began invading houses in large numbers.  Lady beetles start infesting homes and buildings in the autumn months as they leave yards and other summer feeding areas in search of a warm place to winter.  These beetles are found to be attracted to sunnier areas.  They will gain entry through cracks around doors and window, behind siding and other areas that are susceptible to pest infestation.  Lady beetles can fit through openings as small as 1/8 inch in size making homes and buildings easily accessible.

Are they dangerous?

Although lady beetles can be a nuisance when they occur in large numbers, they do not eat wood, destroy fabrics, contaminate our food, or damage other property.  Lady beetles do not sting, however they do bite and they are not known to carry disease but they are a serious pest of soybeans in Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa and other Midwest states.

How do I get rid of Asian lady beetles?

Getting rid of lady beetles can be a difficult task.  Disturbing them will cause them to secrete a strong-smelling yellowish liquid from the joints of their legs which can stain certain surfaces.  Contacting Wil-Kil Pest Control at the first sign of an infestation is the most effective way to ensure your property is kept free of lady beetles.

Can I do it myself?

Controlling lady beetles using do-it-yourself methods is not the most effective solution in most cases and treatments contain pesticides that can be harmful to people and pets if they are misused or mixed improperly.  At Wil-Kil Pest Control, our pest control technicians are highly trained on all methods of eliminating beetles.

How soon can you get here?

At Wil-Kil Pest Control, our goal is to help you in the shortest time possible, with the least inconvenience to you, while resolving your lady beetle problems in the most cost effective manner.  Your Wil-Kil technician is 100% committed to helping you as soon as possible.

How can I prevent this in the future?

Controlling lady beetle infestations is a difficult task.  Sealing cracks and spaces around doors, windows and foundation is helpful, but it may not completely deter these nuisance pests.  If lady beetles have infested your property, call Wil-Kil Pest Control as soon as you notice them to prevent a larger lady beetle problem.
