Pest Identification - Rats

What are rats?

There are two rat species that are of particular concern as pests, Norway rats and roof rats. Both species are both considered commensal rodents, meaning they share the table with humans and are the only ones benefiting from the relationship.

Norway rats are usually 7-9 inches in length, and have course shaggy brown hair.  They have blunt noses and a 6-8 inch tail.  Droppings have blunt ends, are capsule shaped and measure 3/4 inch in length.

Roof rats measure 6-8 inches in length, and have smooth brown fur.  They have pointed noses and a 7-10 inch tail.  Droppings are 1/2 inch with pointed ends.  Unlike Norway rats, their burrowing counterparts, roof rats prefer to nest in the upper parts of structures.

Some of the tell tale signs these rodents are present include, gnaw marks, droppings, tracks, burrows and rub or grease marks.

Are they dangerous?

Rats gnaw objects, eat stored food, and transmit disease by droppings and urine, bites, and the fleas and mites in their fur.

How do you get rid of rats?

Rats may be difficult to control because of their shy nature and their ability to move fast, which is why our service includes the necessary products and techniques to eliminate your rat infestation.

Can I do it myself?

Due to the complexity of treatment and the time required, rats are generally not a pest many people have success in eradicating.  Beware when purchasing pesticides and other products online as many are not effective.  Pesticides can be more harmful to people and pets than they are to the pest if they are misused or mixed improperly.
