Many people make the mistake of thinking that these pests, especially insects, simply “die off” during the winter. For many insects, winter weather means time to hibernate, so they will often seek shelter in warm buildings. Insects like spiders remain active during the winter, assuming they have found shelter inside.
So, what can you do to prevent insects and rodents this winter? Here are 5 steps you can take:
- Store items in plastic sealed containers rather than cardboard boxes. Keep storage areas well organized and try to keep boxes off of the floor. Pests like rodents and even spiders make themselves at home in these nooks and crannies.
- Seal cracks and holes on the outside of your building to help prevent rodents from getting inside, especially where pipelines enter. Protective sealant and caulk can be a good line of defense. Repair and replace damaged vent screens.
- Reduce moisture by repairing any leaky pipes and clogged drains in kitchens and bathrooms. Pests need water for survival and it’s especially attractive for cockroaches that come up through the drains.
- Trim trees and bushes at least 6 feet from the roof. Many animals, such as squirrels, are excellent climbers, and can use trees as leverage to enter your building through the roof or attic.
- Clean up any food items after use and remove food debris from workstations. Again, human food is another source of survival for rodents and insects alike. Additionally, keep garbage receptacles sealed and the areas around them clean.
These pests, especially rodents, can be both a health hazard and property hazard. Rodents spread diseases like Hantavirus by leaving urine and droppings in commonly used spaces. In terms of your property, they can cause physical damage by burrowing holes in your ceilings and walls. They may also chew through wiring and insulation, creating a major fire hazard.
