Ah yes, with the New Year here we get to wipe the slate clean and start over. Many of us decide on some resolutions that will help to create a happier and healthier lifestyle from losing a few pounds to creating a healthier, more organized home. And though we aren’t experts in weight loss or fitness, here at Wil-Kil Pest Control we do know a little something about pests and how they can have a negative effect on the health of your family and home. Although you might not see the connection between pest control and your resolutions, trust us a pest free home will help you achieve a healthier life and home. With that in mind, here are a few pest control tips to go along with this year’s resolutions.

Make sure pets and their living areas are regularly inspected for pests. Pests such as ticks and fleas can enter the home via your pets and, once inside are likely to multiply causing problems for all members of the family…think itchy flea bites. And since Fido or Fluffy will not inspect their bedding for signs of pests, it is up to you as the pet owner to ensure that they and their spaces are free of pests.

Remove standing water outside the home as well as appliances and plumbing inside. Standing water is a major reason that pests are attracted to the property and even to the inside of the home. Pests require water to survive which is why eliminating sources of standing water will reduce swarming mosquitoes in the summer or mice and cockroaches scurrying through the kitchen in the winter. While some pests may be seasonal, pest control is a year round necessity.

Inspect storage areas for signs of pests. Your closets, the attic, garage and basement are all great places for pests to live and thrive. With little human traffic, pests don’t have to worry about being disturbed and instead focus on foraging and increasing their numbers. Inspecting storage areas often, de-cluttering, and replacing cardboard boxes with durable storage containers will help keep these areas free of opportunistic pests.

Avoid over-the-counter pest control products. In fact, before you reach for any spray promising to kill the pest at hand, it is always best to contact Wil-Kil Pest Control first to see if we have a chemical free approach or at least a treatment that will not cause illness for you, your family or your pets. Pesticides can be dangerous especially when mixed improperly or misused.

Resolve to travel pest free this year. We have recently talked about avoiding bed bugs while traveling over the holidays. This is a big one because many people forget just how easy it is to bring bed bugs home from vacation. So before you take off (and no matter what time of the year), read our blog about pest free traveling.
