No one wants to have pests raining on their Fourth of July fun. The Fourth of July is my favorite holiday! It is a great time to get together with family and friends and celebrate Independence Day with a family cook out, maybe catch a parade in town and watch the fireworks at night. This is a great opportunity to make great memories with your family and friends. It is not a time to be dealing with unwanted pests. Unfortunately with the nicer weather also comes more outdoor pests and sometimes they even welcome themselves indoors.
As a mother I know that when I leave the house there are so many items I must remember to keep my family happy and safe. It can sometimes seem overwhelming to go anywhere. Especially on an important holiday with lots of events shoved into one day. However I always strive to fully enjoy these moments with my family. I find it important to be prepared ahead of time so I can enjoy these memorable fun days. I want this Fourth of July to be a happy one so I am going to do all I can to keep it pest free and pleasant.

Here are some things you can do to help be more prepared to keep your family pest free for the Fourth of July celebration.
One item I try to have with us at all times in the summer is bug spray with DEET. This is the most effective mosquito deterrent you can buy. Be sure to ask your doctor about what percentage of DEET you should use for your child’s age.
When getting the family up and dressed for the day I try to choose light colored clothes. Mosquitoes and other stinging pests are attracted to dark clothing.
We also try to stay away from overly sweet smelling perfume, hairspray or deodorant. Mosquitoes and stinging pests are attracted to the sweet smells.
When packing food I always seal it in air tight containers. Ants and stinging insects are attracted to the sweet smells of sugar and fruit.
We always try to avoid being outside during the early morning or dusk hours. This is when pests like mosquitoes are most active.
Our dog has pest and flea treatment administered every month to help him stay pest free and that way he doesn’t bring them into our house. Consult your veterinarian regarding all pest deterrents for your pests.
When it comes to our home being pest free it is important to make sure that our windows and doors have proper screens in them and are sealed tight with no holes. Even the smallest hole can let in the most annoying mosquito.
