Spring weather is right around the corner! Believe it or not, that means that one day soon we will finally be able to go outside again and enjoy the sunshine! But remember, we aren’t the only ones that are going to be active again when warmer weather hits. Spring pests, such as ants, will soon be trying to invite themselves to our outdoor picnics and, if given the chance, march through our homes and into our kitchens.

Ants can be divided into two different groups, nuisance ants and destructive ants. Nuisance ants, like the common pavement ant, will enter into Milwaukee homes in large numbers, contaminate your food, and become very irritating to you and your family. The good thing, is they do not spread diseases or weaken the structural integrity of your home. Nuisance ants live in very large colonies and therefore will enter your home in very large numbers. Once they get inside, it can be very difficult to persuade them to leave.

Carpenter ants, on the other hand, are destructive ants. They are large black ants that will cause structural damage to your home. These ants usually have a large nest located outdoors and then will create smaller “satellite” nests inside homes and close to food sources. They will build these nests in the structural wood of your home, weakening its’ structural integrity. If you find carpenter ants in your home or on your property, a Milwaukee pest control expert should be called immediately to minimize the costly structural damages.

As a Milwaukee homeowner, there are some things that you can do to prevent a spring ant invasion from happening in your home. Prevention tips include:

  • Seal up any openings found along your homes foundation, siding and around utility openings. Caulk any gaps found around exterior windows and doors.
  • Trim back trees, bushes and other plants from the exterior of your home and create a stone barrier between mulch and your home’s foundation.
  • Make sure that exterior garbage cans have tight fitting lids and are kept away from the outside of your house.
  • Inside your home, make sure that you do not keep food out on your counters, but rather keep them in sealed containers or in your refrigerator.
