What Are Boxelder Bugs?

Boxelder bugs are essentially nuisance pests that are often found around boxelder trees. They are oval-shaped with black and orange markings and red-orange eyes. Their diet consists of boxelder tree seeds, fruits, leaves and other vegetation. Boxelder bugs primarily live outdoors and do not target people or animals.

Do Boxelder Bugs Bite?

Boxelder bugs typically do not bite, but they do have piercing-sucking mouthparts that they may use to bite if they feel threatened. Boxelder bug bites may look similar to mosquito bites and              become red and irritated.

Are Boxelder Bugs Dangerous?

Boxelder bugs aren’t venomous, and they do not have stingers, so they do not pose an immediate threat to your health and safety like wasps, hornets or bees might. They do not threaten your facility either — unlike termites, bed bugs or fleas, they don’t seek out to infest spaces. However, these pests can have adverse effects on  your business’s reputation due to aesthetic concerns and customer perceptions.

What Attracts Boxelder Bugs to my Facility?

While they aren’t determined to infest your property like other pests, they won’t turn down a warm, dry warehouse or restaurant when winter weather hits. As temperatures drop, it’s common to find boxelder bugs crawling through cracks and under doors to escape chilly weather. If there are boxelder trees near your building, they may attract other insects as well. And again, while they’re not dangerous, these unsightly pests may create compliance issues and negative impressions among customers.
