What is an Oriental cockroach?

Oriental cockroaches are also known as water bugs. They are named this because they are found around very moist areas and are often seen coming out of drains. Oriental cockroaches are shiny black in color and grow to be about 1 inch in length. This cockroach species has a very strong musty smell that is associated with them. The females have a wide body with short wings, and the males have a narrow body with longer wings. Even though they are winged neither gender can fly. Unlike some other species of cockroaches, Oriental cockroaches have the ability to survive freezing temperature for periods of time.

Why do I have them?

Oriental cockroaches are usually found living in sewers or underneath decaying leaf piles, rocks, or woodpiles. They also move inside homes and buildings when searching for food. They prefer to eat decaying organic matter and starchy foods. Oriental cockroaches enter into homes underneath of doors, through cracks in foundations, and drains. When inside, these roaches hide in crawl spaces and basement areas.

Are they dangerous?

Yes, Oriental cockroaches are considered to be dangerous. Before coming into your house, they were crawling through sewers, garbage, and excrement. Once inside your home, the bacteria on their bodies and legs is transferred to food and other surfaces. Cockroaches are known to transmit Salmonella and other many other types of bacteria that can cause vomiting, fever, and diarrhea. They also carry parasitic worms. Additionally, Oriental cockroaches can trigger severe asthma attacks via their excrement and shed skin—especially in young children
