What are bed bugs?

Bed bugs are bloodsucking insects that are enjoying a revival after nearly 50 years of dormancy.  Adult bed bugs are reddish-brown in color and have a flattened oval shaped body.  The size of an apple seed, these tiny insects are wingless and have microscopic hairs that give them a striped appearance.  Bed bugs are nocturnal creatures that feed exclusively on blood, preferring human blood whenever available.  They will also feed on other warm-blooded animals, such as dogs and cats.

Why do I have them?

Bed bugs are exceptional hitchhikers and will travel a far distance with an unsuspecting host.  They are introduced to homes, apartment buildings, hospitals and other commercial facilities on luggage, clothing and used furniture and are not a sign of housekeeping or sanitation issues.  They like 5 star hotels as much as anyone.  They are especially a problem for establishments that have high occupancy turnover.  Increased global travel and pesticide resistance are also factors in the increased occurrence of bed bugs.

Are they dangerous?

Bed bugs do bite, but they are not known to carry or transmit any diseases to humans.  Their bites often leave behind tiny red bumps that appear in a line or cluster and that may cause minor to severe skin irritation.  Occasionally, bed bug bites do become infected; if this occurs, medical attention should be sought.

How do I get rid of bed bugs?

Once bed bugs have infested an area, they are extremely hard to get rid of.  They are nocturnal and hide during the day in hard to see areas, such as furniture cracks and crevices, as well as inside mattresses and box springs. Contacting Wil-Kil Pest Control is the ideal way to control your bed bug problems.  We offer effective bed bug control services in Milwaukee, Madison and throughout our coverage area that are sure to resolve all your pest problems, including bed bug infestations.

Can I do it myself?
